The Site

The Data Scientist covers a broad range of topics from technical posts about machine learning, data mining, and predictive analytics, to simple visual posts exploring social data and freely available public datasets.  I hope to also contribute to the Python, Java, Hadoop, HBase, Cassandra and Hive communities by posting tutorials and useful code snippets.  All code examples will be released and freely available for download and distribution.

Chris Bates

PhD Graduate Student at the University of Florida and Software Engineer / Data Scientist / Researcher at Grooveshark.com. At the University I write software to detect and characterize explosive signatures in real time for airport security.  At Grooveshark I develop algorithms for our Radio and Search products and build Analytics reports for Grooveshark Artists and Campaign Advertisers, Music Labels, and Managers.

Before coming to Florida in 2007, I graduated as an Engineering Physics major at Santa Clara University.  I did undergraduate research in organic photovoltaics, robotics, and participated in the Solar Decathlon.
